A new week began with the prospect of celebrating the Independence of
the United States on July 4, so amazing to taking part for the first time in US.
Then see a summary of our activities for the week, this time focusing on
Climate Change and Environmental Preservation.
Two visits were made:
• We visited The Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, to see the
Edible Schoolyard garden sustainable food[1].
This is an interesting initiative focused on sustainable development and the
involvement of children and young people in the preservation of the
environment. The Mission of the Edible Schoolyard is essentially to teach life
skills and support academic learning through hands-on classes in a one-acre
organic garden and kitchen classroom. The Edible Schoolyard curriculum is fully
integrated into the school day and teaches students how their choices about
food affect their Health, the environment and their Communities.
• Lawrence Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source[2].
The Tour is located in Berkeley. The laboratory host scientists from all
countries around the world. We were delighted to be in this laboratory which
contributes to the progress of global science research.
Our courses of the week focused on:
• Ethics and the Environment: Leading toward a healthy, just and
sustainable world lectured by Dr. Kenneth Worthy author of'' Nature''
Invisible. It rejects inaction, weak human actions in the face of environmental
degradation, pollution, loss of water resources etc... See videos www.sustainableman.com; www.uncontactedtribe.org and www.theguardian.com . Modern society is faced with
daunting challenges thus, global climate are destabilizing the entire eco
system. How can we incorporate environmental values into our decision making
to lead Communities Toward Future that is healthier, more equitable and more
secure?
• Prof. John Nishio, took a day to keep us on PEST'' Integrated
Solutions and Global Warning and Agriculture: A role for recombinant
Technology''. After having defined the basic concepts, he addressed the threat
of sustainable development as global warming. To address the challenges of the
world, he argues a multidisciplinary collaboration of science because of
interconnectedness of all. How to stimulate political will to action? He
proposed the method of'' Adaptive Management'' See video www.manzanarproject.com He also presented
biotechnology as a solution to agriculture under threat from global warming. It
is for GMOs but me ….??
• Panel Discussion with the structure'' Communities for a Better bar
Environment (CBE)[3]''
with Nile Malloy, Director of the program. The session focused on organization.
Founded in 1978, CBE is one of the preeminent environmental justice organisms
in the nation. The mission of EPC is to build people's power in the Californian
color and low income communities to accomplish and achieve environmental health
and justice by preventing and reducing pollution, and building green, healthy
and sustainable communities through environments. More on www.cbecal.org
• A presentation on the'' Center for Effective Global Action[4]''
about opportunities for collaboration and especially studies here. See www.beriresearch.org and www.easstcollaborative.org .
• Sudha Shetty also continued these modules on leadership (Moral
leadership) and the introduction to public policy with the group work
presentations.
For YALI in Berkeley, we celebrated independence
in small group, some went to Los Angeles, others went to San Francisco and my group remained at
Berkeley after a break of fasting Ramadan collective in a Pakistani restaurant and
admired the fireworks at night of the 4th.
A word on the US Independence Day[5]
Independence Day, also commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States of America commemorating the adoption of the Declaration
of Independence on July 4, 1776,
declaring independence from Great Britain (now part of the United
Kingdom). Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family
reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the
history, the government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day
is the National
Day of the United States.
